A large and comprehensive exhibition about the visual culture of album cover art with a selection of some 400 LP covers. The exhibition ranges from the first illustrated LP covers around 1950 until today’s vinyl revival. In a broad thematic approach the exhibition describes and captures key moments in the stylistically rich and diverse development of album cover art and covers the whole gamut of genres and expressions: jazz, classical music, rock ‘n’ roll diversity and light entertainment. Emphasising the main developments and trends in this diversity, the exhibition explores the image universe of this specific medium through numerous themes addressing genre characteristics, psychedelic style, male and female style icons, cover art body images, urbanism, nature and landscape forms, exoticism with dreams of Paradise, the typographic album cover etc. Most album cover artists remain relatively unknown, but the exhibition showcases the most influential. The exhibition will take up most of the museum’s temporary exhibition space.
The exhibition has received funding from Knud Højgaards Fond and Varelotteriet.
