GREECE - THESSALONIKI - The Cosmos of the Russian Avant-Garde: Art and Space Exploration, 1900-1930

The exhibition examines the close relationship between Russian art and science, in particular, before and after the October Revolution in 1917. It is based on works of art by artists whose works belong to the Costakis Collection. Moreover, several institutions are participating with works on loan, such as the National Library of Russia, the Central Museum of Armed Forces, the regional Russian Museums of Fine Arts in Tula and Tver, the Barbarian Art Gallery of Zurich, the Botín Foundation in Santander, while the private collections of Mrs Aliki Costakis (Athens) and Mr. Vladimir Tsarenkov (London) have also granted works on loan. In addition, the contemporary Russian artists Francisco Infante and Nonna Goriunova are participating in the exhibition with their works.
The exhibition presents -among others- the famous painting by Wassily Kandinsky "Musical Overture - Violet Peak" which travelled to Thessaloniki from the Tula Museum of Fine Arts in Russia.
The exhibition is curated by the director of the S.M.C.A., Maria Tsantsanoglou, the professor John E. Bowlt from USC in Los Angeles, and the professor emeritus of the University of Oriental Studies of Naples, Nicoletta Misler . The exhibition was first organized by the Fundación Botín of Santander.
